Hudson is appointed county road foreman

Executive sessions were common Friday on the Marion County Commission's meeting agenda.

County road and bridge superintendent Jim Herzet requested and received a 10-minute executive session to discuss personnel.

When the session resumed, Herzet announced road and bridge employee Steve Hudson had been promoted to road foreman. Hudson was an equipment operator/mechanic.

Acting road foreman Phil Bowen will work at the county shop.

County attorney Susan Robson requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

A second five-minute executive session was requested by Robson for attorney-client privilege. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

County appraiser Cindy Magill and Robson requested and received a 10-minute executive session with Maggard remaining to discuss personnel. No decisions were made following that session.

In other business:

— The commission approved $690,040 in vouchers and payroll.

— Maggard reported favorable sales tax revenue from July sales. The amount, $41,299, was the highest July revenue in the seven-year reporting period.

In July 2004, $38,948 was collected.

— Area fuel bids were divided between two bidders. Cardie Oil, Inc. of Tampa had low bids for areas one and two, and Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro for areas three and four.

Cardie Oil was awarded bids for 2,950 gallons of diesel fuel at an average of $2.589 per gallon.

Cooperative Grain & Supply was awarded bids for 3,600 gallons of diesel fuel at an average of $2.583 per gallon.

— A resolution was adopted by the commission as the final step for the county's strategic plan to be sent to the state. The plan confirmed the county participated in a regional economic development organization.

— The commission signed a letter to Don Drickey of Kansas Department of Transportation regarding the county's points of negotiation for repair and replacement of county roads affected by the reconstruction of U.S.-77.

— A letter of understanding was signed by the commission to auditors Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd regarding services provided by the firm with the county's ambulance department.

— A road crossing permit was approved for Southwestern Bell near a bridge by Florence.

— Commissioner Dan Holub asked Herzet when repairs were planned for Remington Road between U.S.-56 and Pilsen and Limestone between 290th and Tampa. Herzet said those roads would be patched when blade patching was completed this next week.

The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Monday, at the courthouse.
