FFA students participate in Katrina relief effort
Along with Future Farmers of America chapters across the state, Peabody-Burns FFA students are involved in collecting supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The Kansas FFA Association has launched a statewide effort called "Operation: Living to Serve II" to assist hurricane victims in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
Students in PBHS FFA are collecting non-perishable food items, school supplies, bottled water, and personal hygiene items at both PBHS and Peabody Elementary School.
To accommodate donors, collection boxes also will be located at Peabody State Bank and Don's Drugs downtown. Sonya Roberts, PBHS FFA sponsor, said cash donations will be accepted and may be sent to her at Peabody-Burns High School.
Chapter members will collect these relief items until Sept. 14. At that time they will deliver them to Golden Heritage Foods in Hillsboro. The company is providing a truck and driver to take donated items Sept. 15 to disaster areas on the Gulf Coast.
The hurricane relief effort is one of many service projects in which local FFA students take part during the school year.
