Historical society plans tour

The well-received fall newsletter, "The Springs of Marion County," has resulted in a bus tour being offered to the public at 1 p.m. May 26 following the Memorial Day dinner at the Brown Building.

A bus driver and guide will be on hand to take people interested in learning more about our county's natural wonders to various sites.

A two-hour trip is planned and suggestions will be made for other sites to visit privately. Organizers remind that comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes are a must. There is a charge for the tour which will go to projects of the historical society and to defray the cost of gas for the bus.

The next newsletter, "Need Money — Headed West — Stop In Peabody," will feature a history of the banks of Peabody. Information shared by banker Shreves Avery and information from the survey of downtown buildings done in 1991, will be the subject of the spring 2003 edition, due out shortly.

Did you know that Peabody once had seven banks? Where were they and who ran them? How can one building be home to so many banks? Remember that bank that fell in the hole? Or the fire of 1884 which really did not burn clear down to the Tumbleweed Antique Store site?

Plans were to include this newsletter as a part of your Main Street/alumni news, but illness in the Homestead Printing staff has the project on hold.

Look for a newsletter in an upcoming Peabody Gazette-Bulletin issue. Paid members of the Peabody Historical Society automatically receive a copy and copies will be available at the Peabody Museum this summer.
