Peabody Historical Society is planning an "Indian Summer Gospel Gathering" Sept. 30. Two well-known gospel groups will present a musical program at Peabody Christian Church, food will be available at the Carnegie Library basement, and the entire museum complex will be open for tours. This event is planned as a non-walk event (as opposed to the annual walking tour) for visitors and hometown folks alike.
Carmen South has agreed to take over as historical society president to finish out 2006 since Janet Hamous has resigned and moved to Wichita.
Reprinting "Peabody's First One Hundred Years" has started and should be ready in time for Christmas giving. The fall newsletter will be about Watchorn.
The board heard information from the state historical society concerning the impact of renovations and or potential demolition in areas designated as National Historic Register properties. Changes can be made by working with the officials, but stiff fines can be levied for disregarding the guidelines.
On the other hand, generous tax breaks and grant money also are available to properties that are in a historic district.
It is hoped a member of the state historic preservation officer's staff can be brought to town to speak to interested property owners and review specific guidelines.
