Hillsboro scholars team takes second
Hillsboro Scholars' Bowl varsity team earned second place Nov. 15 at the Wichita Collegiate meet.
In pool play, Hillsboro defeated Douglass, Kapaun-Mount Carmel, Canton-Galva, and Wellington. They lost to Wichita East B.
Hillsboro finished second in pool play and advanced to the final eight teams in bracket competition.
Hillsboro defeated Andover Central in the quarter-finals; Bishop-Carroll in the semi-finals; but lost to Wichita East A in the finals.
Team members were Corissa Bartel, Daniel Berg, Jacque Fisher, Robert Jost, and Greta Kliewer.
"The students did a great job," said coach Stuart Holmes.
"It was a great start to the varsity season but the students know we need to continue to work and improve as the season progresses."
Holmes was pleased with the team. They defeated large schools and only lost in the finals by 10 points (one question) to Wichita East, who placed second at the 6A state meet last year.
McPherson
The scholars' bowl team competed Thursday at McPherson, going 3-2 in pool play but failing to advance to the championship bracket.
Hillsboro defeated Hesston, Moundridge, and El Dorado, but lost to Hutch-Trinity and Smoky Valley.
"Every match is different," said Holmes, "based on the questions you get that round.
"Smoky Valley and Hutch-Trinity also have excellent teams and things went their way," he concluded.
