Hillsboro scholars take third

Hillsboro High School Scholars' Bowl team battled to a 3-1 pool play record and advanced as a wild card Nov. 29 at Hesston.

The Trojans lost to eventual champion Wichita Independent in the first round, 70-60.

They rattled off three straight blowouts to earn a wild card bid toward the finals match.

HHS knocked off Cheney 100-20, Hutch Trinity 55-20, and Wakefield 70-40, to advance.

In the quarterfinal Hillsboro defeated Maize 80-125, before falling in the semis to Andover, 60-50. In the third-place match they beat Goessel 50-30.

"Placing third out of 30 teams is outstanding," coach Stuart Holmes said. "The team did a great job."

Merideth Kliewer and Victor Rogers competed in their first varsity meet, and Holmes was glad to have them.

"They answered questions correctly," he said. "So with them in addition to our strong quizzers of Robert Jost and Greta Kliewer, the team was very competitive."
