Hillsboro festival is weekend of family fun

Memorial Day weekend in Hillsboro promises to be entertaining, educational, and fun.

The 2006 Hillsboro Family Festival will begin the evening of May 26 with a mixer at Memorial Park.

Musical entertainment will begin at 6:30 p.m. with country entertainer Mike Flavin of Newton. Polka maestro Alex Stuchlik of Lost Springs will perform at 7:30 p.m., followed by Shane Marler and Rod Jost of Hillsboro at 8:30 p.m., and Derek Mayfield of Hillsboro at 9:30 p.m.

A lighted tent will give local businesses an opportunity to promote their businesses. There is no charge for businesses to participate.

During the evening, barbecue beef sandwiches, beans, chips, and soda pop will be available for button-wearers at no additional cost.

The following day will begin early with a fly-in and breakfast.

The public is invited to attend the event at Alfred Schroeder Field from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public also is invited to attend a breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m.

The event is sponsored by Marion County Aviation EAA Chapter 1301.

A remote control air show demonstration will be held at noon.

A 5k run and a one-mile walk/run for youth will begin and end at the former city swimming pool. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. with the run beginning at 8 a.m.

Also beginning at 8 a.m. is a three-man scramble at Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course. The event is open to anyone who wants to participate. Pre-register at the golf course.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. a German/Low German Festival will be held at the historic church at Tabor College. Low German stories, talks, and reminiscences are planned. The Hillsboro German Singers and Schnigglefritz Band will perform.

Tours of the Peter Paul Loewen House and the Friesen Mill will be provided from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mennonite Settlement Museum.

A German sausage sandwich meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. by the Friends of the Hillsboro Museums at the Scout House.

A classic car show sponsored by Route 56 Classic Cruisers will be held beginning with registration at 8 a.m. in Memorial Park on the circle drive. The awards ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. Hamburgers and brats will be available to purchase.

A parade will be at 4 p.m. going north to south on Main Street and turning west at D Street to fairgrounds.

A tour of Hillsboro High School will be held at 4:30 p.m. for residents and alumni.

An all-school reunion will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Hillsboro High School. Alumni interested in attending should contact HHS Alumni Association at (620) 947-2585, or at alumni@hillsboro-kansas.com.

Banquet tickets are $15 per person or $12 each with purchase of festival button.

A demolition derby will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the fairgrounds arena. The event is sponsored by Marion County Fair Board.

On Memorial Day, the James William Miesse American Legion Post #22 of Hillsboro will provide a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park Circle.

The Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center will open for business at 11:30 a.m., located near D and Date streets.

A grand opening for the pool is planned for June 24.

Buttons for the festival are $5 each and can be purchased at Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and the day of the festival.

The button will provide entry to the wearer for all events except the all-school reunion and demolition derby.
