Henry Schubert

Henry Hans Herman Schubert went home to be with the Lord Sept. 19, 2005, at the age of 91 at the Bonell Good Samaritan Center, Greeley, Colo.

He was born March 22, 1914, on the family farm near Ramona. He was the son of Albert and Augusta Schubert, the sixth of nine children.

He was raised on the farm and took over operations of the farm after he married Gertrude Pauline Hicks at the United Brethren Church in Iola on May 27, 1945. Gertrude was an elementary school teacher in Ramona. They were blessed with two sons, Keith and Gary.

Henry and Gertrude moved into the town of Ramona in 1954. He worked as the manager of Welch Manufacturing in Ramona and retired in 1994 at the age of 80. He loved to play cards (pinochle and pitch being his favorites), fish, and spend time with his family and friends.

Henry was the Ramona city clerk for 30 years. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ramona until it closed its doors and disbanded in 1987. He took care of the lawn and grounds of the church and the adjoining cemetery for many years. He also served on the Lewis Cemetery board for the city of Ramona. He was the president of the Ramona Centennial Committee in 1987.

He and Gertrude were most recently members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Herington.

In the mid-1950s, he was one of the people who saw a need for consolidation of the northern Marion County high schools to ensure a better education for the children of the area. After the consolidation, he served for many years on the school board of Centre High School which was built during the consolidation process.

He and Gertrude moved to Greeley, Colo., in May 2004, due to health reasons and to be closer to their sons and their families.

A memorial service will be held in Ramona at a later date.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Clara Lorei, Bertha Strickler, and Erna Hensley; and two brothers, Dr. Albert Schubert and Arthur Schubert.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Gertrude; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Vicki Schubert and Gary and Carol Schubert; four grandchildren, Kimberly Glueckert and husband, Adam, Micah Schubert and wife, Cara, Tara Schubert and fiance, Gunnar Weber, and Kristina Schubert; two great-grandchildren, Logan Glueckert and Tasia Weber; sisters, Anna Schimming of Herington, Martha Ehrhardt of Ramona, and Frieda Struebing of Wichita.

Henry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, son, and friend. He was a gentle, sweet man whose life was built around his family and friends, and he showed his love constantly to all of us. He will forever live in our hearts and be greatly missed.

A memorial fund has been established with the City of Ramona to erect an official city sign at the entrance of Ramona that commemorates Ramona, Kansas as a Centennial City in honor of Henry's long years of service to the city and his leadership of the Centennial Celebration.

Gifts may be sent to the City of Ramona, Box 84, Ramona 67475, noting "Schubert Memorial" on your check.
