Hazel McClave
Hazel Evaline (Vantuyl) McClave, 104, died Feb. 23, 2002, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.
The daughter of the late William and Arabelle (Straughn) Vantuyl, she was born Dec. 13, 1897, at Raymond, Ill.
The family moved to Peabody when she was a baby. She attended school at Peabody, then Bellview Rural School (District 25), graduated from grade school at Peabody and from Peabody High School in 1917.
She received her teacher's certificate, taught at Ridge northwest of Peabody, then at Milton rural school where she lived in Florence and rode a railroad hand car to the school each day.
She was married to Stanley Perlee McClave Dec. 31, 1919, at Emporia.
Twins Shirley Arlene and Donald Gene were born to the couple. Donald died Aug. 23, 1929.
Among those who preceded her in death were her parents, her husband, brothers Vernon and Harold, and son, Donald Gene McClave.
Survivors include her daughter, Shirley McClure of Peabody; brother, Marvin Vantuyl, Akron, Ohio; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She had been treasurer of Peabody Presbyterian Church 41 years and a Sunday school teacher 36 years.
In 1949 she started a baby sitting service and continued until 1977, serving 103 Peabody families.
She lived at Peabody Community Living Center from January 1996 until she moved to the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield in January 2001.
Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. March 13 at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody
Funds have been established in her memory with Peabody Library Association and Peabody Historical Museum.
