Harvey County issues burn ban

Harvey County Emergency Management director Lon Buller has announced a burn ban in Harvey County.

Harvey County Commissioners approved the ban Tuesday morning.

"The ban is in effect until at least Jan. 9," said Buller. "At that time the commissioners will review our situation and issue another ban if it doesn't improve."

Buller said commissioners felt conditions are right for fast spreading fires.

"It's not as bad here as it is in Texas or Oklahoma," he said. "But with the warm temperatures, high winds, and lack of moisture we are looking at problems if a fire gets started."

Buller also asked smokers to use ashtrays instead of throwing cigarette butts out the window.

"Firefighters in Oklahoma and Texas suspect several fires there were started by cigarette butts tossed from cars," he said. "Please ask smokers to be more careful while this threat exists."

Burn bans are issued for seven days at a time. The public will be notified if the ban is lifted or extended.
