Harold Clark

Former Peabody superintendent of schools, Harold M. Clark, 89, died Nov. 19, 2006, at New Braunfels, Texas.

He was born May 8, 1917, at Florence.

He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia with a teaching degree in 1940. After his military service, he graduated from KSTC in Emporia in 1950 with a master's degree in school administration.

On May 17, 1942, he married Margaret Whipkey of. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 18, 1942, and served in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Caribbean.

He served 32 years as a school administrator, beginning in 1950 as principal and superintendent at Peabody and superintendent at Hiawatha. From 1960, until he retired in 1982, he was superintendent of schools at Concordia. He was the founder and first dean of Cloud County Community College in Concordia in 1965. He also helped start many school building and construction projects in Peabody, Hiawatha, and Concordia.

He moved to New Braunfels in 1993.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy; and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; one son, Tom Clark of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A survivor in this area is his sister-in-law, Betty Clark of Strong City.

A memorial service was held this morning (Wednesday) at the Presbyterian church, New Braunfels, Texas. Inurnment, at a later date, will be in Strong City.
