Grays are grand champs at Labor Day barbecue cookoff
Sheri and Rod Gray, the Pellet Envy competition barbecue team from Leawood, won the grand champion trophy and $2,000 in the Florence Labor Day barbecue cook-off.
The Grays will receive free entry in the 2008 contest.
Pat Miller of Jefferson City, Mo., cooking alone as "Sweet Chipotle BBQ" was reserve champion and received $1,500.
Johnny Trigg of Alvarado, Texas., cooked as the "Smokin Triggers" and took third.
The "Smokin Triggers" participated in the Winfield and Florence contests and received the grand champion trophy of the "Route 77 Championship Labor Day BBQ Cook Off." Florence and Winfield partnered in this challenge to teams and offered an additional $1,400 purse.
Teams with the highest combined points from both contests were eligible for extra prizes during the awards ceremony at Florence. Twenty teams participated in both contests.
The Florence cook-off had 39 teams.
