Grandson places second in championship swim meet

Gaston Glenn, grandson of James and Carmen South of Peabody, recently competed in the Missouri Valley Level 1 Championships held in Wichita.

His five first-place finishes, (50 breast, 100 breast, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly, 100 individual medley) along with one third-place (50 freestyle), one fourth (200 individual medley), and one ninth-place finish (500 freestyle) were enough to claim the second place high point award trophy for the boys' 11-12 division.

His spectacular showing was topped off by breaking a seven-year-old Wichita Swim Club record in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Gaston's time of 31.91 seconds was more than two-tenths of a second faster than the previous record. The former record was set in 1995 by Michael Bruce of Wichita, who was a competitor in the 2000 Olympic Trials and is the current NCAA Champion in the 200-meter breaststroke.
