The Goessel High School golf team returns to the links this season with four golfers who have experience at the 1A state meet.

Leadership for this year is expected to come from three seniors, Nathan Ensz, Cameron Voth, and Derek Brown.

All three played in the state tournament at Hesston last year.

Tyler Schmidt, a sophomore, also was a steady player at state, and is expected to be on the varsity team again this year.

Two other letterwinners will contribute to the success of this year's team. Seniors Sam Lehrman and Jake Schrag will try to secure a spot on the varsity squad.

Several of the players this year remember competing at state last year and are determined to do better the next chance they have.

"For some reason, we did not have a good day at state," coach Greg Bontrager said.

The golfers agreed.

Bontrager said 15 boys and three girls showed up for the early-season practices.

Out of those, the coaches will get to experiment with the six who will score most consistently for the varsity team.

There also are two junior varsity meets on the schedule.

In the spring high school golf season, girls are allowed to play, but must play the same distances as the boys.

"Some girls are very deserving to be on the golf team, and do very well in competition," Bontrager said.

Justin Coup and Kelli Merrit will assist Bontrager with the coaching duties this year.
