Goessel High School girls' basketball team won one and lost one this past week.

In the Feb. 7 game against Ell-Saline, the Cardinals tied the game 19-19 at halftime after falling behind Goessel in the early part of the game.

The Bluebirds needed a strong fourth quarter if they were to win. Trenae Wilson hit eight-of-eight free throws, all in the fourth period, as the Bluebirds finished the game with a 55-42 victory at Brookville.

Rinda Duerksen led the scoring with 17 points, Wilson had 12, and Courtney Berkholz also scored 12 points. Kory Hiebert canned nine points and Brittany Dirksen finished with five points.

On Friday night, the Bluebirds lost an overtime game with Canton-Galva 31-30.

Goessel built an early lead, but the Eagles whittled the deficit down as the game progressed. With 1:00 to play the Bluebirds held a 26-23 lead, but Kaitlyn Bressie hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds to play, to send the game into overtime.

Hiebert scored the first basket in overtime to give the Bluebirds a 28-26 lead. Allison Enns then banked in a three-pointer for the Eagles with 1:23 remaining.

With 19 seconds to play, Duerksen hit both shots of a one-and-one to give the lead back to Goessel 30-29. The Bluebird defense allowed Kylie Haines to get off a shot close to the bucket for a score with eight seconds remaining.

Goessel could not convert on its field goal attempt as the game ended in favor of the Eagles.

Hiebert led the scoring for the Bluebirds with 11, Dirksen six, Duerksen five, Caitlin Goertzen four, Berkholz two, and Wilson two.

The Goessel girls are now 3-7 in the Heart of America League and 7-11 overall.
