Goessel girls claim third place at Berean Academy invitational
Goessel High School girls' basketball team won two games and lost one this past week at the Eli Walter Invitational at Berean Academy.
In the first game, Goessel had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. The Bluebirds defeated Hutchinson Central Christian 46-37.
Scoring for the Bluebirds were Courtney Berkholz 17, Kory Hiebert 16, Rinda Duerksen nine, Trenae Wilson two, and Brittany Dirksen two.
The victory in the first round meant Goessel would face Berean for the fourth time this year.
GHS jumped ahead of Berean at the end of the first quarter, but the Warriors held the Bluebirds to four points in the third period to extend their lead to 14 points.
Berean was victorious by a final score of 47-37. Dirksen led the way for the Bluebirds with 15 points, followed by Hiebert with 12, Wilson four, Berkholz four, and Duerksen two.
The Bluebirds finished the tournament Saturday with another victory against Leon-Bluestem. Goessel did not score a point in the second quarter, but the team only trailed 18-15 at halftime.
An excellent fourth quarter propelled the Bluebirds to a 36-34 victory for third place.
Dirksen and Hiebert led in scoring with 12 points each. Berkholz scored seven and Duerksen five.
The Bluebird girls are now 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the Heart of America League. Two home games highlight this week with league games with Moundridge and Remington.
