Goessel High School football team never trailed in the home game Friday night against Marais des Cygnes Valley.

It defeated MDCV 44-16 to even its record at 1-1 in district play.

Neither team could score in the first quarter. Adam Goering ran across the goal line from five yards out on the first play in the second quarter and Travis Buller carried the ball in for the two point conversion.

With 11:10 to play in the second quarter, a Trojan running back sprinted 61 yards down the right sideline to tie the score 8-8.

Justin Fensky scored the first of his touchdowns with 9:00 minutes to play in the half on an 8-yard run and the Bluebirds led 14-8. Bubba Holder, Jordan Voth, and Kurtis Duerksen found success in getting into the Trojan backfield to make tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

With 3:19 to play, the defense held on fourth down and the Bluebirds got the ball back.

Fensky ran through the middle of the field, breaking tackles enroute to a 26-yard touchdown. The Fensky PAT was successful, making the score 22-8 at halftime.

The Bluebirds had to punt on their first possession in the second half, but Fensky recovered a Trojan fumble. Less than two minutes later, Adam Goering was high stepping his way through tacklers and rambled 40 yards for a touchdown.

The pass from Garrett Hiebert to Kyle Unruh was good and the Bluebirds led 30-8.

As the third quarter began, Goessel dodged disaster when a tipped pass was almost intercepted by MDCV but dropped for an incompletion.

Tight end Jared Unrau got into the end zone as Hiebert was rolling to his left and scored on the five-yard pass play to give the Bluebirds a 36-8 lead.

The Trojans put together a long drive on several plays and scored with 5:50 to play in the game.

The on-sides kick was recovered by MDCV, but the defense held. Holder recovered a fumble moments later.

Kyle Unruh circled under a rainbow pass from Hiebert to get the Bluebirds down to the 12-yard line and Fensky took the ball across the goal line for the touchdown and two-point conversion.

The Bluebird's defense and offense played well in the fourth quarter.

"We are in good physical shape and we play strong in the fourth quarter," head coach Justin Coup said.

Goessel will play Friday against Flint Hills. The Bluebirds overall record is now 4-2.
