Goessel cross country team places fourth at league tournament

Seven of the 12 boys' teams in the Heart of America League participated Thursday for team scores at the Peabody course.

Goessel High School entered nine runners in the event, and came away with fourth place as a team.

Sedgwick, Peabody, and Trinity finished ahead of the Bluebirds and Canton, Bennington, and Remington came behind the Bluebirds in team totals.

Evan Fast earned a fifth-place medal out of 58 runners with a time of 19 minutes, 46 seconds. Teammates from Goessel who helped in the team scoring were Kellen Jenkins 18th (21:23), Brady Peters 21st (21:30), Casey Wedel 27th (22:07), and Jake Schrage 37th (23:00).

Other team members who competed were Anthony Esau 37th, Chris Johnston 49th, Travis Duerksen 53rd, and Sam Lehrman 56th.

The Goessel girls sent two runners to the event with Janessa Wedel picking up 20th place in 14:57 and Jitka Vitova coming in 37th out of 50 runners with a time of 16:35.

GHS will compete at regionals Saturday at Lake Afton and the top 10 individuals will compete at state.

The top three teams will earn a trip to state, as GHS will be looking for its second straight .
