It could be called "the nightmare at Elbing."

The Goessel boys' team suffered a cold spell Jan. 10 that found them behind 13-2 against Berean Academy at the end of the first quarter.

By halftime, Goessel had tied the game.

Goessel was able to get ahead during the third quarter and held on for a Heart of America League victory, 37-34.

The Bluebirds outscored Berean 35-21 in the final three quarters.

Individual stats for Goessel showed Jordan Voth scored 12 points and had five rebounds; Garrett Hiebert had nine points, six rebounds; Travis Buller, six points, four assists; Tyler Schroeder, four points; Brett Goerzen, four points; and Nathan Ensz, two points and two blocked shots.

"We shot 1-of-12 from the field in the first quarter and ended the game with 37 percent from the field," said coach Justin Coup.

The Bluebirds could have helped themselves at the free-thrown line, however. They made only 2-of-7 at the charity stripe.

Inman

The Bluebirds picked up their ninth win of the season Friday night against Inman, using their height and quickness.

Garrett Hiebert hit 7-of-10 field goals. Nathan Amstutz was 3-of-4 and Tyler Schroeder was 3-of-5.

The Bluebirds led at halftime 26-17, and hung on to that lead for a three-point win, 57-54.

Hiebert led Bluebird scoring with 16, followed by Buller with 10 points and six assists, Voth with nine points, and Amstutz eight. Justin Fensky hit two three-pointers for six points. Other scorers included Schroeder, six and Ensz, two.

The Bluebirds now are 9-1 overall and head to Burrton for the boys' tournament where they will face, for the third time this season, the Berean Warriors.
