Goessel boys win five before first loss

With a 4-0 start to the season, Goessel High School boys' basketball fans were wondering if this could be the year to go undefeated. But the tough Heart of America League seldom sees a 1A team go without a loss.
The Bluebird boys notched their fifth victory of the season Dec. 13 with a 37-32 nail-biter against Berean.
Both teams scored 14 points in the first quarter, but the Bluebird defense held the Warriors to only two second-quarter points, and Goessel led at the half 26-16.
Berean scored 10 points in the third period but still trailed by eight. In the fourth quarter Goessel nailed three free throws to out last Berean by five.
For the game the Bluebirds were 5-7 from the free throw line and Berean was only 2-7. Goessel was paced by Garrett Hiebert with 10 points, followed by Jordan Voth with eight, Tyler Schroeder and Travis Buller six, Nathan Ensz four, Justin Fensky two, and Brett Goerzen one.
Friday, Goessel traveled to Hutchinson with a league game at Trinity. The Bluebirds came out at the short end of the score for the first time this season. GHS lost the game 61-47.
Goessel is now 5-1 overall and 0-1 in HOA league play. The Bluebirds will be home for two games during the first week of January, against Peabody Jan. 2 and Bennington Jan. 5.
