Goessel boys finish second at Centre CKTL

Competing in its first meet of the year the Goessel High School boys' track team finished second out of five teams April 4 in the Centre CKTL at Marion High School. The girls' team finished fourth.

Garrett Hiebert, Brett Goerzen, and Craig Banman all grabbed top-three finishes in each of their four events. Head coach Sandy Banman was pleased with her team's overall performance.

"These boys are such hard workers," she said. "To finish second behind a much larger Marion squad is quite an accomplishment."

Overall the Bluebirds racked up 121.5 points behind Marion's 156.5. Centre came in at third with 37 points, Moundridge notched 33 points, and Wichita Independent had 13 points. Hiebert led GHS with first-place finishes in both the triple jump and javelin. Banman brought home a first-place finish with a leap of 40 feet, three inches in the triple jump. Goerzen threw 142-1 in the javelin, also good enough for first place.

Banman thinks there are good things to come for the boys after their performance against the bigger schools.

"They have high goals individually and as a team," she said. "With today's start to the season they have a bright future ahead of them."

Despite finishing fourth, the girls' team had some individuals also perform well. Courtney Berkholz took first in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 13.48 and 29.73 seconds. She also was a part of the 4x100m relay team with Jitka Vitova, Jessica Cleveland, and Tricia Fensky that took first place. Fensky also performed well in her other events with second place finishes in both the triple jump and pole vault.

"It was great to see our girls' team score as many points as they did today," Banman said.
