Goessel boys capture 15th victory of season years ago
Goessel High School boys' team traveled Feb. 14 to Hope for a non-league game.
Both teams were tied at 16 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bluebirds outscored the Lions in each of the following quarters.
Three Bluebirds reached double-digits with Jordan Voth scoring 23 and Garrett Hiebert 22. Nathan Ensz tossed in 12 and Brett Goerzen hit six. Travis Buller, Nathan Amstutz, and Tyler Schroeder each had two points.
Goessel exploded for 30 points in the fourth quarter Friday at the same time the Sedgwick boys were as cold as the weather outside.
Goessel dominated each quarter as the defense helped the Bluebirds to a 15-8 lead after one quarter and 28-16 score at the half. The Bluebirds continued to play well in the third period, extending their lead to 50-24.
The game became even more lopsided as the Bluebirds scored 30 points in the fourth quarter to win by a final score of 80-35. Ten players got into the scoring column for the Bluebirds. Hiebert led the team with 18 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Ensz 11, Voth 11, and Sheldon Goerzen 11. Brett Goerzen scored nine with four steals, Amstutz eight, Justin Fensky five, Tyler Schroeder four, Austin Unruh two, and Wade Wilson one.
The boys sport a 15-5 overall record and an 8-3 record in the Heart of America League. The Bluebirds are seeded second in a six-man 1A regional to be held at Burrton. The boys will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the Elyria and Little River game.
The Bluebirds are 5-1 so far this season against other 1A schools. Other teams in the regional are Burrton, Centre, and Olpe. The top two teams in the 1A regional tournament will go on to play next week in the sub-state tournament at either El Dorado or Emporia.
The winner at sub-state will represent its school at the state tournament March 8-11 at Hays.
