Gladys Jewell
Gladys A. Jewell, 93, Peabody, died May 9, 2008, at St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.
Born Dec. 8, 1914, near Clayton, N.M., she was the daughter of Harry and Grace Selvy. Shortly after her birth, the family returned to farm near Burns.
She graduated from Burns High School and earned an associate degree from El Dorado Junior College in 1934.
On Sept. 3, 1937, she married Paul Jewell at Elton, Md. The couple farmed in the Peabody-Burns area throughout their married life. He preceded her in death in 1992. Also preceding her in death were an infant son, Arthur Jewell; two daughters, Janet Sims and Janell Jewell; her parents; two brothers; and a sister.
She was a homemaker and employed at Baker Furniture Store, Peabody, until her retirement. She was a member of Peabody United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Order of Eastern Star, Sorosis Club, and the Peabody Senior Center.
She is survived by two sons, Rex Jewell and wife Berneda of Manhattan and Robert Jewell and wife Barbara of Olathe; four sisters, Vera London and Gaila Henry of Wichita, Grace Sebert of Raymore, Mo., and Verda Stoskopf of El Dorado; five grandchildren, Jona Neufeld and husband Darin of Goodland, Shera Sims and husband Trent Vu of Harrisonville, Mo., Jennifer Palmgren and husband Bryce and Chad Jewell, all of Manhattan, and Michael Jewell of Montgomery, Ala.; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Austin, and Megan Neufeld and Kendal and Rachel Palmgren.
Funeral services were held this morning (Wednesday) at Peabody United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Ragland officiating.
Burial was in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.
Memorial funds have been established with the church, Peabody Senior Center, or St. Joseph Village, Manhattan.
