Giesbrecht resigns as senior center president

Florentine Senior Citizens met July 7 at the senior center in Florence for a monthly meeting and meal.

Following the flag salute, the blessing was given by Lenora Graham.

Betty Ireland introduced Judi Burkett from St. Luke Hospital, Marion. She presented a program on strokes. Strokes are the third largest cause of death following heart disease and cancer. Hand-out materials, videos, and discussion helped people understand the disease.

Noreen Weems, director of Marion County Department for Elderly, explained the farmers' market program for low-income people. The program is for residents in Hillsboro and Peabody. But, she reminded, the commodity program is countywide.

An amusing story on living wills was given by Betty Inlow. A list of items or "Did you ever wonder why?" was read by Betty Ireland.

Roger Giesbrecht resigned as president of the senior center and as chairman of the commodity program. He and his wife have moved.

Bud and Rose Vinduska will chair the commodity program in Florence. They will be assisted by Harvey Wells as he transports the food items from Council Grove to Florence and Burns.

Ireland will serve as president, leaving the vice president and secretary jobs open for volunteers to be selected at a later date.

Everyone toured the recently-completed ADA restroom and new floors in both rooms.

There is no meeting in August and the next meeting of Florentine Senior Citizens will be Sept. 1.

The August primary elections will be held at the senior center for the first and second wards of Florence and Doyle and Fairplay townships.
