GHS scholars bowl team headed to state
Goessel High School scholars' bowl team advanced to a four-team round robin competition Friday to decide which two teams would qualify for state from the Stafford regional.
Goessel and Stafford emerged as the winners of the 12 regional teams, and will compete Saturday at Bucklin.
The questions asked of the competitors were more difficult than in previous years.
"We used to score 60 or 70 points to win, but this year we had one game we won 20-15," junior Garrett Hiebert said.
This is the fourth year in a row that the Bluebird squad has qualified for state. The format at state will include 16 teams divided into two pools of eight.
Goessel is included in a pool with teams from Ashland, LaCrosse, Lebo, Lincoln, Pike Valley, Greeley County, and Wetmore.
Coach Bruce Stucky has sent several teams to competitions during the year, but fewer and fewer schools are hosting tournaments.
The five team members who will represent Goessel at state are seniors Kyle Unruh, Evan Janzen, and Adam Goering and juniors Janessa Wedel and Garrett Hiebert.
