Jay Gfeller, a Peabody-Burns High School graduate, enlisted March 20, 2003, in Kansas Army National Guard. On Sept. 24, 2004, he was called to active duty for deployment to Iraq.

After several months of training at Fort Sill, Okla., he deployed with the 891st Engineer Combat Battalion for a year-long deployment.

While home on leave this summer, the Peabody community kept him busy with a homecoming held at the American Legion, being a D.J. for the alumni dance, riding as an honoree in the Fourth of July parade, helping with fireworks, and being in charge of the sound system for the fireworks show. Jay is a great asset to his hometown!

Currently, Jay works for the recruiting and retention command, Kansas Army National Guard as an officer and warrant officer recruiter.

He lives in Topeka with his wife Rachel, and their three "kids," family pets Gizzmo, Precious, and Daisey.
