Frozen pipe causes wastewater discharge in creek

Waste water was discharged into Spring Creek at the South Olive bridge this past weekend when it was discovered that the sewer pipes that run under the bridge from the South Olive lift station had frozen.

A problem was discovered Thursday, but city crews reviewed the situation and felt with warmer temperatures moving into the area, the situation would be alleviated.

"Oddly enough, the weather was on the way to becoming more moderate when we ran into trouble," said city administrator Jeff Benbrook. "Probably because it was the weekend and more people were home, doing laundry and such. Those activities just overwhelmed the system after we realized we had a problem with frozen pipes."

Kansas Department of Health and Environment was notified. City personnel met with KDHE and county officials.

"Emergency contingency plans were implemented," said Benbrook. "If this should ever happen again we will be better prepared. And we will know to watch for these issues in the future."
