From the president: May is time of new beginnings

By MARY AVERY

President, Peabody Main Street Association

Just about this time every May, the countdown begins. The countdown to Memorial Day — for as every student knows, summer begins Memorial Day weekend. The pool is open and school is forgotten until August.

And, Peabody begins to get ready for returning alumni and former residents. The American Legion begins to put up the Avenue of Flags, the sophomore class prepares the annual community dinner, and the historical society plans a tour of community interest.

Welcome home and enjoy the weekend. The Peabody Main Street Association board welcomed three new board members this spring, Leslie LaFoy, Morgan Marshall Marler, and Dennis Riggs. Each brings an incredible amount of talent and resources to benefit our community.

Leslie LaFoy will serve as our design chairman. Leslie has a background as a history teacher as well as being a published author of historical fiction. Her background will be a wonderful asset to the organization. Visiting with Leslie quickly gets you excited about historical preservation.

Morgan Marler will serve as vice president. Teamwork and leadership experience through college sports and her current management position will help lead us to smooth functions. Her experience with the Peabody Main Street Association through volunteering on the organization committee will assist us all in continuing to more forward. We anticipate accomplishing much with Morgan.

Dennis Riggs will serve as our recording treasurer, continuing a longtime community commitment as an economic restructuring committee member. His financial background and knowledge of computer software will strengthen our budget development.

Returning board members include Beth Eldridge, chairing the promotions committee, Susan Marshall, who chairs the organization committee, Jeff Benbrook, who serves as our liaison with the city council, and myself as the president as one of the most dynamic, creative, and dedicated board of directors this community has ever had.

We're excited about our plans for the coming year and hope the community at large enjoys and supports our efforts to make Peabody the best place in Kansas to live. As always, we welcome anyone who wants to be part of the team.
