Fourth of July plans better than ever

Plans for the annual July Fourth celebration continue to move forward with just six weeks left until the big event. The Peabody Fourth Fest Society has a full schedule of activities planned.

With the Fourth falling this year on a Sunday, the group is working to fill the whole weekend. A carnival has been secured and will be at the park from July 2 to 4.

Also scheduled are a one-pitch softball tournament, Kiwanis flea market (two days this year instead of one), dog show, horseshoe tournament, community church service, parade, and live entertainment preceding the fireworks show.

A new event this year will be a car show on the Fourth.

Committee member Kristi Silvernale said, "With the Fourth on Sunday, we have the opportunity this year to spread the events over several days."

Silvernale said there are several display pieces that could still use sponsors. Businesses, families, high school classes, and individuals may choose to fully fund a set piece or make a donation to cover only part of the cost. Donations also may be made in honor of an individual or group.

Aerial displays also can be funded in the same manner.

Silvernale said the cost of putting on the fireworks show has tripled in the past 16 years. The record of expenses from 1987 (the earliest celebration for which she has documentation) shows expenditures of $5,113.

"In 2003 we spent $15,994," she said.
