Fourth Fest committee plans for 2002 celebration years ago
While it may seem that the sweltering temperatures of a Kansas July are far in the future, the Fourth Fest committee has already begun the planning necessary to pull off another bang-up July 4th celebration in Peabody.
The holiday will fall on a Thursday this year, so planners are once again not counting on the hordes of people who attend when a weekend is involved.
"We are planning to have a parade, an alumni dance, entertainment before the fireworks, some children's rides and activities, and weekend softball," said Fourth Fest chairman, Kristi Silvernale. "And we expect that the fireworks display will be just as spectacular as ever."
Silvernale also announced that the winners of the Fourth Fest button contest had been selected.
"We gave the button contest a bit of a different twist this year," she said. "We invited all the students from Marion County elementary, middle, and high schools to submit entries."
Two winners were selected. They were Brittny Taft, a second grader at Peabody Elementary School and Jessica Slater, a freshman at Peabody-Burns High School. Each of the girls will receive $25 and buttons to attend the 2002 celebration.
"We had several nice entries and it was hard to pick the winners," Silvernale said. "There are a lot of talented kids in our county."
The Fourth Fest group has been putting committees together that will be in charge of various parts of the celebration. Anyone interested in volunteering to help either on the day of the event or with the preparation should contact one of the Fourth Fest members.
Silvernale said that all-in-all, things are shaping up. "We will be ready with another spectacular celebration this year," she said.
