Former Burns resident to celebrate 100th birthday years ago

Former Burns resident Marie Brening Wright will celebrate her 100th birthday Aug. 8.

She was born in Burns and earned the nickname "Classical Slim" while starring in basketball.

She was employed by Southwestern Bell in Burns, Marion, and El Dorado.

On May 26, 1930, she married Don Wright and the couple spent 44 years together. They lived in Ponca City, Okla., before moving to Milwaukee, Wis., in 1933.

The couple raised four children, Tom, Kathryn, Marilyn, and Gregg. A fifth child, James, died as an infant.

In December 1976, Marie married Max Breitzman. The couple lived in Crivitz, Wis., and Greendale Wis. He died in 2004, at the age of 101.

Marie has been a member of St. Alphonsus Parish, Greendale, Wis., since the first Mass was said in 1938.

She attributes her longevity to being a lifelong Notre Dame fan and the ability to "take things as they come."

She will celebrate her 100th birthday in August with a family picnic by her children, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, stepchildren, relatives, and friends.
