FLORENCE YESTERYEARS: 75 years ago

The Cottonwood river reached its highest stage here in 20 years late Tuesday evening when it left its banks and during the night spread over all of Florence east of Main street. Early in the afternoon, it began running over the pavement east of the Fifth Street bridge and backing up against the railroad to the south of the bridge. A few homes east of the river were flooded and the occupants had to get out.

Mayor Fred Walter and his council have expressed their intention of spending some money in an effort to have the park a real beauty spot of the town. They have passed their intentions to the organizations of the town and have found a hearty response from each one. Organizations will round up its members and get everyone out to the park for a day's labor in leveling the ground, carrying off the stone, and otherwise getting the ground into shape to plant grass. The men will donate a day's labor in the park and the women will arrange a feed on the grounds for the workers. All the labor is to be donated and from the response it seems that the city is united upon the subject of having a real park.
