FLORENCE YESTERYEARS: 75 years ago

Aug. 4, 1927

At a meeting of the county commissioners on Monday of last week a contract was let for the sanding of the New Santa Fe Trail, east of Florence, to the Chase County line. In a few days the sand will begin being transported to the road and it will be spread upon the highway gradually so that the traffic can pack it on the surface of the road.

Since the county moved the routing of Highway 77 between Florence and Marion by changing it from the road up the Cottonwood River to run over the new trail to about five miles west of town and then north, the Cottonwood valley road has been in poor condition. But last week, the valley road was worked, some of the bad places filled in and dragged, and it is in the best shape now that it has been since the county abandoned it.
