FLORENCE YESTERYEARS: 50 years ago
The annual booster trip to advertise Labor Day was held last Monday. Nine cities were visited by the caravan which included the Florence school band. Cars were driven by Cowboy Kendricks, Frank McMillen, Fred Koch, Joe Kelly, Mrs. Sam Ludwig, George Clasen, Harry Seible, Jerry Pruitt, and Frank Haucke. The following towns were visited: Cedar Point, Clements, Elmdale, Strong City, Cottonwood Falls, Marion, Peabody, Hillsboro, and Burns.
Ed Janzen, a member of the Jayhawk 4-H Club, was one of the eight winners in Marion county of a purebred Duroc gilt. Sponsored by the Sears, Roebuck foundation, each contestant wrote an essay on "Value of Livestock on the Farm." This essay and the facilities to care for the gilt determined the winners.
