FLORENCE YESTERYEARS: 50 years ago

August 14, 1952

The local volunteer fire department recently received money from the Insurance Department of the State of Kansas. Since 1895, insurance companies from outside of the state doing business in Kansas have been paying a tax and the proceeds are divided among the fire departments of the state for the relief and benefit of members of fire departments who are injured or physically disabled while in the discharge of their duties as firemen.

The Roniger Brothers will be in Florence Labor Day with part of their unusual collection of Indian arrow heads. These Indian arrow heads were found on their farm a mile or two south of Bazaar. Here the hills form a natural amphitheater myth and no doubt was used in the early days by the Indians either as a battle ground or a camping ground. Around their home they have found some 5,000 arrow heads as well as pipes and tomahawks.
