Initial installation of One-Plus Dialing (Direct Distance Dialing) equipment has begun at the Florence central office, Jack King, manager for Southwestern Bell, said this week. The $42,500 project will allow Florence's more than 360 subscribers to dial their own station-to-station long distance calls to most communities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The local manager noted that until One-Plus Dialing is introduced here, Florence subscribers will continue to have the same low rates on their operator-handled station-to-station calls as do customers in exchanges with direct dialed long distance service.

On Tuesday, the Senate passed legislation introduced by Sen. James Pearson (R-Kan) that would coordinate federal involvement in the development of a national weather modification policy. The legislation would create a national program of weather modification research and experimentation. The inflation will require the Secretary of Commerce to conduct thorough studies as to the present technology of weather modification. "Weather modification projects certainly have the potential to moderate disasters. This legislation would provide the technological base for future battles against drought and other disasters." Pearson said.
