FLORENCE YESTERYEARS: 104 years ago
OCTOBER 7, 1898
The city council has instructed City Marshal Minturn to ring the fire bell every evening at 8 o'clock to warn the boys to get off the streets. This town has a curfew ordinance and it will be strictly enforced hereafter. The practice of ringing the bell will begin tomorrow night, and all boys who do not want to be jailed must heed this warning.
About 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon a cloud of insects, bees, grasshoppers, hornets, and butterflies passed over Wichita. Millions of them fell in the streets. In places where they struck the wall of the higher buildings there were piles of them on the walk. It is thought they came from the forest fires in Colorado.
