Florence resolving water plant problems
Final payment has been held for the water plant clear well project because of cracks in the cement cover.
Florence city superintendent Ken Hoffman reported Sept. 7 to the Florence City Council that Kansas Department of Health and Environment had approved the repairs.
A 12-inch rubber roofing material with a 10-year warranty will be used to cover the entire cap of the well.
When repairs are completed to the council's satisfaction, final payment will be made.
Hoffman also reported:
— Lightning protection has been completed at the water plant.
Back-wash problems and equipment adjustments remain at the treatment plant. The manufacturer was working with Hoffman to correct the problems.
Since the city has had problems with the operation of the new water plant, councilman Randy Mills suggested a letter of understanding regarding the warranty of the equipment be written.
— The street sweeper had quit working and it was not feasible to repair the old piece of equipment, Hoffman said.
Washing streets with fire hoses was not a valid solution because it would add additional dirt to the storm sewers.
— A request was made to purchase three to five tons of street patching material at $45 per ton. Hoffman said any leftover material could be covered and stored.
— A third bid is being obtained regarding roof repairs at city springs.
In other business:
— Councilman Dan Ludwig reported street signs could be purchased for $60 per sign. There were nine signs designated for replacement.
— The city has permission from Kansas Department of Transportation to erect signs along U.S.-50. The signs will be double-faced.
City clerk Darla Gore will obtain written specifications.
