Florence PD participates in program to deter drunk driving
Florence police chief Conroy Miller has announced that he and his officers will be aggressively patrolling the highways around Florence during the latest Kansas Department of Transportation awareness program against drunk driving.
Drivers on highways U.S.-50 and U.S.-77 will be under close scrutiny until Sept. 4. The program, called "Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest." started Friday.
During the period look for additional officers on area roadways enforcing Kansas drunk driving and other traffic laws. The program is supported by a grant from KDOT to Florence police department. Last year, more than 17,000 arrests were made across Kansas for DUI (Driving Under the Influence).
Florence is among 100 law enforcement agencies across the state, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, which will participate in "Drunk Driving: Over the Limit, Under Arrest."
According to Miller the aim of his office is to drastically reduce the number of people driving while impaired on the highways around Florence.
"We're not saying, 'Don't drink,' just use a sober driver when you do. Get in the 'designated' habit," Miller said. "And remember: your best protection against a drunk driver is to buckle up. Drunks can be found driving at any hour, any place.
"We want people to come to Florence for the Labor Day celebration and have a good time," he added. "But that includes everyone getting home safely."
