Florence Historical Society has monthly meeting
Florence Historical Society met Sept. 9 at the Harvey House museum and discussed a number of issues.
It was reported that members will be busy in September and October serving the traditional Fred Harvey meal to seven organizations and groups from all over the state of Kansas.
It also was reported that the Mexican Cantina meal served on Labor Day was a success.
The next newsletter will be published in November. Anyone with historical articles or pictures of interest should send them to Mary Jane Grimmett. It was noted that response has been excellent from the last two newsletters and numerous membership dues have been paid. Dues are $10 per year. A lifetime membership is $100. Anyone interested in preserving a bit of Florence history is welcome to join the society.
Granite memorial sidewalk stones still are available. Cost is $100 per name with 10 names printed on a stone.
Richard Wyss will be constructing stone picnic tables to be placed around the Harvey House grounds.
Vickie Turner and Kristal and Jayne Timm represented the historical society riding on the stagecoach in the Labor Day Parade. The Harvey House was honored to be chosen as grand marshal of this year's parade.
The 2004 community birthday calendar will be printed soon. Members will be meeting to begin work on it. Anyone who would like to purchase one and have their family birthday listed, should contact any member.
In attendance at this month's meeting were Sarah Cope, Marjorie Jackson, Mary Jane Grimmett, Neva Reid, Twilah Williams, and Judy Mills.
The next meeting will be Oct. 7.
