Flag football team finishes tough season

The fifth and sixth grade flag football team completed its season a couple of weeks ago. The team had a tough schedule this year with their record ending at three wins and four loses.

They played teams from Hillsboro, Goessel, and Canton. All games were played Saturday mornings in Hillsboro between Sept. 28 and Oct. 26.

There was total of 16 players. Those from the fifth grade were Sean Jones, Jacob Simmonds, Garrett Weems, Seth Alstrom, Curtis Frederick, Michael Christian, and Michael Hamous. Sixth graders were Tyler Slater, Cade Middleton, Jake Middleton, Jordon Foth, Devon Horting, Christopher Brooks, Chris (Bob) Dunfield, Brandon Pickens, and Brian Wingert. The boys played on both offense and defense.

The team was coached by Sam Wingert, assisted by Kurt Hessel and Tom Alstrom.

There were no statistics kept during the games. Touchdowns were made by Brandon Pickens, Jake Middleton, Tyler Slater, and Jacob Simmonds. Simmonds scored at least one or more touchdowns per game. Brian Wingert was quarterback on most of the passing plays. With only one interception on over two dozen attempts, he completed passes to Jordon Foth, Brandon Pickens, and Jacob Simmonds throughout the season.

On defense, the whole team made key tackles during the games. Four boys, Chris Dunfield, Chris Hamous, Tyler Slater, and Jacob Simmonds, had an interception. Two of the interceptions were run back by Tyler Slater and Jacob Simmonds for safeties.

The team thanks parents and family members who came to the games and cheered for them. It was a great and fun year. The coaches wish the sixth graders luck when they move up to junior high school next year.
