Fishing tournament will aid needy

An annual fishing tournament to benefit area needy will be held Saturday. The tournament, sponsored by American Legion Post 95 Sons of the Legionaires, is held in honor of Craig White who died in 2000.

White was generous with friends and family as well as stranger. After his death, the people he left behind created a memorial in his memory that would help many of the people unable to receive assistance elsewhere.

"He was always generous," said his brother Todd Henderson. "The fund is available to help people who may find themselves in a temporary bind because of financial problems or health problems."

Recipients are never named.

The fishing tournament will be held at Peabody Country Club, a place White enjoyed so much he often camped there for weeks on end.

Participants need to sign in at 8 a.m. at the country club. They may fish elsewhere if they choose, but must be back for weigh-in of the fish between 3:30 and 4 p.m. No late weigh-ins will be allowed.

Everyone fishing for the tournament must have a valid Kansas fishing license. Catfish and flatheads only are allowed; no bullheads. Two-person teams are required at $20 per team.

There is a drawing and hamburger cookout at the country club after the weigh-in. Prizes for the catch of the day also will be given at that time.

For questions about the tournament or to donate food or prizes, contact Todd Henderson, 983-2451, Mark Levering, 983-2221, or Bret O'Dell, 983-2097.
