First grade class celebrates 100 days of school years ago

First graders at Peabody-Burns Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school Jan. 23.

Each child was asked to bring 100 items to school. During math, the students counted the items by ones, fives, and 10s.

Every bagged item was then weighed. The lightest thing brought was confetti; the heaviest was 100 sheets of paper.

Students estimated how far 100 steps would take them in the halls. Rulers were used to measure 100 feet.

To conclude the project, 100 jelly beans had to be shared equally among the classmates. The children had to determine how many each would receive, then made tally marks for the colors given.

All year, the students have been marking the days on the class number line, as well as creating a bar graph by grouping days into 10s. They will continue to mark days on their number line to see how many days of school there are in a year.
