Family folklore, culture class to be offered at college
Personal family history, tradition, and folklore will be explored in a class offered by Tabor College during the spring 2006 semester.
"Family Folklore and Culture" will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings beginning Jan. 31.
Peggy Goertzen, director of the Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies, located on the campus of Tabor College, Hillsboro, will teach the course.
Students may take the course for either sociology or history credit, or it also may be audited.
Students will learn basic research and interview methods, including use of archival materials, and how to use primary and secondary sources to discover personal culture and to develop a family narrative.
"The intergenerational mix between the young person and the older community person is marvelous, and they each learn from each other," said Goertzen. "Everyone's story is valid."
The public is invited to enroll in the course. Three hours of college credit may be earned. Those who wish to take the course but do not seek to complete a degree program may register as guest students by contacting the Offices for Enrollment Management at 620-947-3121.
