Exterior stonework completed at printing museum
Tom Clark, with assistance from Lisa and Josh, has finished the repairs to the south wall of the exterior of the Printing Museum. The south wall of the museum started falling into Jim's parking space last June, and the same week Greeley Gas announced the museum complex would need to pay $484 monthly for gas, using their cost-averaging formula.
The project was hampered with extreme heat and extreme cold when the concrete mixer was in use, but Clark put in countless hours working on the project through weekends and holidays.
The Peabody Historical Society received a $3,800 grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing as an emergency repair project. The state Main Street organization contributed $3,200 to the repairs. Clark and Bob Phillips (Phillips Roofing Company) donated $1,100 in labor and rock. Only about 18 inches at the top of the southwest wall still needs work.
The public may be unaware that this wall actually was the interior of the wall of the old Print Shop built by Editor Morgan in 1884 and used by Gazette editors until it burned in 1967.
The historical society used funds from the State Fair of 1885 to complete the nearly $10,000 repair job which not only is a structural repair but also a contribution to the beauty of the downtown business area.
