Engineering contract approved for Sunflower Road

New jail architect will attend Monday's meeting

Marion County Commission have committed to resurfacing Sunflower Road, south of Marion, and South Third Street to Main Street in Marion.

The commission approved a contract with engineers Kirkham Michael, Inc., of Wichita for $15,000 for design engineering, and up to $45,000 for construction engineering when the project is a "go."

Kansas Department of Transportation will reimburse the county up to $432,000 as part of a deal when U.S.-77 was closed for reconstruction.

In other business:

— Representatives from the architect firm of Law Kingdon of Wichita will attend Monday's commission meeting to discuss jail designs.

— The commission approved a bid of $19,090 for a 2007 Chevrolet Impala from Irv Schroeder County Motors of Hillsboro for a sheriff's patrol car. The county could have purchased one directly from GMAC for $2,000 less but decided it was more important to support a local dealership.

Other bids were $23,036 from Hillsboro Ford-Mercury for a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria and $23,099 from Wright's Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep for a 2007 Dodge Charger.

— Costs to renovate and improve the county's health department building was determined to be too great. However, the county will complete necessary limestone and mortar repairs.

— Documents were approved and signed by the commission to go one step closer in receiving a $40,000 grant for a revolving loan program for small and emerging businesses in Marion County with fewer than 50 employees and $1 million in annual sales.

— The purchase of four computers were approved for a total $5,882 from Great Plains Computers and Networking of Marion. Two computers are for the clerk's officer and two for the treasurer.

— The commission entered executive session to discuss the hiring of a new lake superintendent and elderly department director.

The commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday in the courthouse.
