EMS director placed on probation by commission

Darryl Thiesen, Marion County Emergency Medical Services Director, was placed on six months probation Monday following two executive sessions.

Prior to the executive sessions, Thiesen and Woody Crawshaw, an EMS employee, informed the commission that ambulance charges from August and September 2004 had not been collected or could not be collected because necessary invoices had been lost.

The total of the lost revenue was $6,466, which the commission had no choice but to write off.

Commissioner Randy Dallke said he was disappointed that the error was not caught before now.

Thiesen was hired in October 2003, and Crawshaw in October 2004.

The six-month probation period will run from Sept. 25 through March 25. During that time, the commission will review Thiesen's performance.

In another related matter, the commission instructed Thiesen and his office to pursue the collection of a $350 ambulance run from a person on Oklahoma Medicaid.

Thiesen explained in order for the county EMS office to collect Oklahoma Medicaid payments, a lengthy application would have to be completed. In the end, if Oklahoma was similar to Kansas, only $100 would be collected.

The EMS director said he would check with the county attorney because he was not sure if it was permissible to try to collect from Medicaid recipients.
