Emma Stewart

Emma L. Stewart, 77, of Newton, died Nov. 22, 2006, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita.

Born June 1, 1929, at Peabody, she was the daughter of John and Gertrude (Stryker) Topham.

She graduated from Peabody High School in 1947, attended the University of Bellevue at Bellevue, Neb., and Bethel College, North Newton. She was employed by ITT Corporation at Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Neb., from 1976 to 1988.

On Dec. 18, 1974, she married Ronald Stewart.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Audrey Boothe, Eula Jennings, Doris Quinton, and Olive Ax; and two brothers, Wayne and Darwin Topham.

Survivors include three daughters, Ginny Matern of Salisbury, Md., Julia Carroll of Evanston, Ill., and Elaine Davis of Newton; two stepdaughters, Linda Wright of Papillion, Neb., and Cindy King of Hailey, Idaho; three brothers, Howard Topham of Aldarado, Texas, John Topham of Peabody, and Robert Topham of Wichita; four great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and 15 step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Petersen Funeral Home, Newton, with the Rev. Phil Fischer officiating.

A private family inurnment was held.

A memorial fund has been established with Bethel College Performing Arts.
