Elsie Schmidt
Elsie F. Schmidt, 66, of Newton, died Nov. 21, 2003, at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.
Born May 27, 1937, at Goessel, she was the daughter of Sam J. and Agnes (Hiebert) Flaming.
On May 6, 1960, she married Kenneth W. Schmidt.
She and Kenneth lived in Goessel for 17 years then moved to Newton. She helped organize and was president of the Goessel Garden Club.
A teacher, Avon salesman, and homemaker, she taught for six years at Goessel Elementary School.
She was a member of New Creation Fellowship Church and a former member of the Goessel Women's Christian Association, having served as president for one year.
Schmidt was an M2 partner and volunteer in the chaplain's office at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roy Flaming; and two sisters, Edna Flaming and Mary Ann Jansen.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth of Newton; two daughters, Loretta Schmidt of Newton and Karen Borrego of Evans, Colo.; four brothers, Jim Flaming of Hillsboro, Ed Flaming of Durham, Ray Flaming of Crater Lake, Ore., and Orville Flaming of Weatherford, Okla.; a sister, Rose Voth of Buffalo Mills, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tabor Mennonite Church near Goessel with the Revs. Ruth Penner and Wes Bergen officiating.
Burial was in Tabor Mennonite Cemetery.
Memorial funds have been established with the American Heart Association or the New Creation Fellowship Early Childhood Development Program.
