Elsie Johnson

Elsie Marie (Wallace) Griffith Johnson, 94, died Dec. 30, 2002, at Hutchinson. She was born west of Peabody on Aug. 29, 1908, the daughter Carl M. and Irene J. (Snyder) Wallace.

She attended the First Baptist Church in Peabody and was in high school the year the "new" high school was built.

She married Edmund (Ted) Griffith May 25, 1926. They lived in the oil fields in Florence, Canton, and Oklahoma and owned Ted's Service and Camp in Newton.

Elsie moved to Hutchinson in 1941 and went to work for Dillons. She was the pastry department manager for 19 years and helped open Dillon's stores across Kansas.

She married Vern Johnson July 1, 1950.

She loved flowers and traveling.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters Edith Brush and Rachel Ferrell, and a brother Marion (Shorty) Wallace.

Survivors include her daughter Marjorie Valladares of West Columbia, S.C.; son Robert Griffith of Thailand; stepsons Wilford Johnson of Alden and M. Wayne Johnson of Walnut Creek, Calif.; eight grandchildren including Deidra Hendricks of Newton; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was at Wesley Towers, Hutchinson, with burial at Peace Valley Cemetery, north of Sterling.
